Lithium polymer: ceramic separators are safer

Volta relies on cardboard and leather, while modern lithium polymer batteries use ultra-thin plastic films made of polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). These films are strong enough to separate the electrodes of the battery from each other, but at the same time provide microscopic pores that allow ion exchange between the electrodes so that current can flow.

Polyethylene and polypropylene are flexible, easy to process and have very good electrochemical properties, which are ideal conditions for lithium polymer batteries. These durable materials have a weakness, and that is heat. At a temperature of about 120 degrees Celsius, the plastic begins to melt and the pores close. The ion exchange is stopped and the power supply is cut off.

This "shutdown" is designed to prevent the temperature from rising further and help the battery maintain its safety features. In some cases, this attempt will not succeed and the temperature will continue to rise. If this is the case, the plastic separator will melt completely; resulting in contact with the electrode, which can lead to a dangerous short circuit.

 

Heat resistance of ceramic separator
